EDWARD VAN SLOAN played him in the original Universal Studios films, DRACULA & DRACULA'S DAUGHTER.

Probably the best known portrayal of Van Helsing, however, was by PETER CUSHING in the Hammer Studios series of films, with CHRISTOPHER LEE as Count Dracula.
    * Nosferatu by FW Murnau in 1922 was based on Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. John Gottowt played Professor Bulwer, the equivalent of Van Helsing. It was an unauthorized version of Dracula, so all of the names were changed. Nosferatu was released again in the 1990's with all the original names from the book restored, including Van Helsing.

    * In 1924, Hamilton Deane obtained permission from Bram Stoker's widow to adapt Dracula for the stage. Deane was to play Dracula, but he changed his mind and played Van Helsing instead, becoming the first actor to play the role using the original name from Stoker's book.

    * In 1931, Edward Van Sloan played Van Helsing in the movie Dracula. At the same time, Eduardo Arozamena played Van Helsing in the Spanish version. Van Sloan was the first actor to reprise the role of Van Helsing in a sequel, Dracula's Daughter, in 1933.

    * Van Helsing has also been played by many other actors in movies, television, and on the stage, Sir Laurence Olivier and Sir Anthony Hopkins among them.

    * PETER CUSHING- Although not the first to play Van Helsing, Peter Cushing has played him more times than any other actor, thus immortalizing the character in cinema history. Most of the popularity related to that character can be traced back to Cushing's many portrayals of the vampire-hunting doctor.

    * Well, he certainly wasn't Hugh Jackman. Before he became the main character of his own movie, Van Helsing was Dracula's archnemesis in uncountable movies, stage plays, and television shows.

    * Although Hugh Jackman is well known currently for his portrayal of "Gabriel" Van Helsing, the actor I feel who really immortalized the role was Peter Cushing as Abraham Van Helsing in about 7 or 8 movies from the late '50s into the '70s.

    * Edward Van Sloan played Abraham Van Helsing in the 1931 movie "Dracula", this is the first time the character appeared on screen.

    * Edward Van Sloan played Abraham Van Helsing in "Dracula" (1931). A Spanish version of the film with a different cast was shot at the same time on the same sets. Eduardo Arozamena played Van Helsing in that film.

    * Someone seems to have a strange obsession with Professor Van Helsing lately. To answer the question, many actors have played him for the better part of a century. If the question would name a specific production, answering would be easier.

    * Hamilton Deane, who with the permission of Bram Stoker's widow, adapted Dracula for the stage in 1924. Deane planned to play Dracula, but decided to play Van Helsing instead.

    * Many actors played Van Helsing in movies before Hugh Jackman. Go to the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) and search characters using the name Van Helsing. Click on the first one, Professor Abraham Van Helsing, and you can see them all. Edward Van Sloan and Eduardo Arozamena were the originals, both playing Van Helsing in separate movie versions of Dracula in 1931, and Sloan later reprised the role in a sequel called Dracula's Daughter.

    * The above answer is misinformed. Eduardo Arozamena played Van Helsing once, and Edward Van Sloan played him twice, long before Peter Cushing first played the role for Hammer Studios in 1958. Peter Cushing, however, did play Van Helsing more times on film than any other actor, opposite Christopher Lee who holds the record for playing Dracula in more movies than any other actor.

While "Nosferatu" (1922) was based on the same story, in an attempt to avoid licensing the work, did not use the character of Van Helsing.

The Andromeda Galaxy is a spiral galaxy approximately 2,500,000 light-years away in the constellation Andromeda. It is also known as Messier 31, M31, or NGC 224, and is often referred to as the Great Andromeda Nebula. Andromeda is the nearest spiral galaxy to our own, the Milky Way. As it is visible as a faint smudge on a moonless night, it is one of the farthest objects visible to the naked eye, and can be seen even from urban areas with binoculars. It is named after the princess Andromeda in Greek mythology. Andromeda is the largest galaxy of the Local Group, which consists of the Andromeda Galaxy, the Milky Way Galaxy, the Triangulum Galaxy, and about 30 other smaller galaxies. Although the largest, Andromeda may not be the most massive, as recent findings suggest that the Milky Way contains more dark matter and may be the most massive in the grouping. The 2006 observations by the Spitzer Space Telescope revealed that M31 contains one trillion stars, more than the number of stars in our own galaxy, which is estimated to be c. 200-400 billion.

In 1922, Einstein was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics, "for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect". This refers to his 1905 paper on the photoelectric effect, "On a Heuristic Viewpoint Concerning the Production and Transformation of Light", which was well supported by the experimental evidence by that time. The presentation speech began by mentioning "his theory of relativity been the subject of lively debate in philosophical circles also has astrophysical implications which are being rigorously examined at the present time."

In 1925 he won the Copley Medal

In 1929 he won the Max Planck Medal

In 1999, Albert Einstein was named Person of the Century by Time magazine.

1905: An expository paper explaining how airplanes fly includes an example which is incorrect. There is a wing which he claims will generate lift. This wing is flat on the bottom, and flat on the top, with a small bump at the center. It is designed to generate lift by Bernoulli’s principle, and Einstein claims that it will. Simple action reaction considerations, though, show that the wing will not generate lift, at least if it is long enough.

1922: Einstein published a qualitative theory of superconductivity based on the vague idea of electrons shared in orbits. This paper predated modern quantum mechanics, and is well understood to be completely wrong. The correct BCS theory of low temperature superconductivity was only worked out in 1957, thirty years after the establishing of modern quantum mechanics.

1939: Einstein denied several times that black holes could form, the last time in print. He published a paper that argues that a star collapsing would spin faster and faster, spinning at the speed of light with infinite energy well before the point where it is about to collapse into a black hole. This paper received no citations, and the conclusions are well understood to be wrong. Einstein’s argument itself is inconclusive, since he only shows that stable spinning objects have to spin faster and faster to stay stable before the point where they collapse. But it is well understood today (and was understood well by some even then) that collapse cannot happen through stationary states the way Einstein imagined.

Adventure on the Brisbane River, Queensland

Don’t be deceived by the wide, mangrove-fringed Brisbane River winding leisurely through the Brisbane city centre. This scenic, serene waterway is the backdrop for a whole range of exhilarating outdoor adventure. Kayak past Brisbane’s glittering sky-line at night or take in the breathtaking panorama of the city and its surrounds from the top of the Story Bridge. Climb or abseil the sheer cliffs at Kangaroo Point or walk, bike ride or rollerblade over the floating walkways of Brisbane Riverwalk. Afterwards, take an adrenalin break in the City Botanic Gardens or the lush riverside parks of South Bank.

With its warm, sub-tropical climate, gentle river and string of riverside sights, Brisbane is a perfect place for a paddle. The canoeing and kayaking tours are all run by qualified instructors, so you don’t even need experience. Slap on some sunscreen and head out on a lunchtime tour past the tangled green parks, glass skyscrapers, old wooden homes and historic buildings. Or experience the lit-up magic of the city - including the bejewelled silhouette of the Story Bridge - at evening or dusk. Afterwards, enjoy a seafood dinner, riverbank barbeque or late-night cheese platter as part of your tour.

Once you’ve seen the iconic Story Bridge from beneath, why not tackle the 80 metre climb to its top? It’s an exhilarating experience that’s one of only three of its kind in the world. Start from Kangaroo Point and learn about the history of the city, bridge and river as you traverse the superstructure. At the top, your exertion is rewarded with a breathtaking panorama over the city, river, Moreton Bay and islands and nearby mountain ranges. See the city sharpen in dawn’s pink light, enjoy the most expansive view during the day or get a top-of-the-bridge perspective of Brisbane at twilight or night. Afterwards, continue your adventure with a cold drink in a bar that was once a World War II bomb shelter. It’s one of the unique attractions of the historic hotel beneath the bridge.

Kangaroo Point is also the place to join the climbers and abseilers scrambling up and down the 20m high cliffs. Scale the sheer weathered walls on a rock-climbing tour, where dizzying views over Brisbane and the river await you at the top. Or learn to abseil on a daunting downwards journey– the first scary step will be one you won’t forget. Experienced instructors lead tour groups for all skill levels, from beginner to expert, so you’re sure to find a tour to suit.

For river-level adventure, join cyclists, roller-bladers, walkers and joggers on the palm-fringed Brisbane Riverwalk, a 20km network of floating pathways. Stop to admire the artistic sculptures or relax in the riverside parks. Picnic beneath the mangroves and macadamia trees of the wild City Botanic Gardens on the river’s north bank. On the other side, Riverwalk leads past the lagoon and sprawling gardens of South Bank. Here you can break up your day’s adventure by browsing the markets, dining alfresco or catching a performance of dance or theatre in the Queensland Cultural Centre. Alternatively, cruise the Brisbane River on a golden gondola or historic wooden paddle steamer. After all the pulse-racing activity, you might just be ready for some river relaxation.

Or experience the lit-up magic of the city – including the bejewelled silhouette of the Story Bridge – at evening or dusk.

Muir Woods Is also amazing.

Hours: 8am to sunset every day

Cost: $3/person + optional donations

Not Allowed: Bicycles, Pets, Horses, Smoking, Picnicing, Camping, Portable Radios

Get away from the city and relax at Muir Woods, just a short drive of under an hour from downtown San Francisco, over the Golden Gate Bridge. You can enjoy a beautiful, ancient redwood forest that is truly unique for just $3 per person. The winding drive to the forest through the Marin Headland hills is truly special. Make sure to dress a little warmer for the cool, shaded, moist area.

The Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae), in the family Nymphalidae. It is perhaps the best known of all North American butterflies. Since the 19th century, it has been found in New Zealand, and in Australia since 1871 where it is called the Wanderer. In Europe it is resident in the Canary Islands, the Azores, and Madeira, and is found as an occasional migrant in Western Europe. Its wings feature an easily recognizable orange and black pattern, with a wingspan of 8.9–10.2 centimetres. Female Monarchs have darker veins on their wings, and the males have a spot called the "androconium" in the center of each hind wing from which pheromones are released. Males are also slightly larger.

Joshua Tree National Park is located in southeastern California. Declared a U.S. National Park in 1994 when the US Congress passed the California Desert Protection Act, it had previously been a U.S. National Monument since 1936. It is named for the Joshua Tree forests native to the park. It covers a land area of 789,745 acres. A large part of the park is designated to wilderness area; some 429,690 acres. Straddling the San Bernardino County/Riverside County border, the park includes parts of two deserts, each an ecosystem whose characteristics are determined primarily by elevation: the higher Mojave Desert; and the lower Colorado Desert. The Little San Bernardino Mountains run through the southwest edge of the park.

An unusual business deal brought a marginal pro basketball team to San Antonio, Texas, and a "name the team" contest was held and "Spurs" won. The San Antonio Spurs became a reality when the wealthy owners of the Dallas Chapparals of the now defunct ABA unloaded them to a few San Antonio businessmen headed by Angelo Drossos. The deal was so tenuous that the first year the team was essentially rented... and only purchased at the end of the first year in San Antonio... a most unusual beginning for a team that would enter the NBA three years later... and win multiple NBA Championships. It's a great team name... short, spirited, and reflecting the Old West heritage of San Antonio, Texas... at least in SpurEd's opinion.
