There are a few tips for students to become safer at school. One is to not be involved in violence in any way. This includes bullying and teasing. Never carry a gun. If someone threatens you with a gun, remember to never take matters into your own hands. If you think another student is planning an “attack,” make sure to tell an adult that you can trust, or even a close friend. Another way to stay safe and teach others about school violence is to join a club or after school group that promotes a violence free school (Keep Schools Safe). One group, STAR, was organized specifically for students who want to help promote non-violent schools (S.T.A.R). These tips may sound simple, but can be very helpful when put in violent situations.

Another strategy for dealing with school violence is to include an anger management class for students with anger problems, or at risk students. Students who resort to violence need to recognize that they may have an anger problem and may need to get treatment for it. Anger happens to everyone and there are several different ways to help in controlling and preventing anger. Adolescents must first recognize what triggers their anger and distance themselves from this. The next thing to do is find a healthy outlet for this energy created by anger. Some examples are to go for a jog, walk or playing the guitar. The most important thing for an adolescent to remember is that there is always a way out.
